Do you need a dumpster permit in San Marcos, TX?
Updated Sep 29, 2026
Short answer
A dumpster on a private driveway or lot usually doesn't need a city permit. A dumpster in the street, alley, or on a sidewalk is in the public right-of-way and usually needs approval from the City of San Marcos first. Renters also need the property owner's OK.
Private driveway or lot
If the whole bin fits on the property, a city permit usually isn’t needed. That’s the easiest setup and the one most haulers prefer.
Street, alley, or sidewalk
Streets near downtown and around Texas State are narrow, and parking is tight. If there’s no room on the lot and the bin has to go on the street, that’s public right-of-way. Street placement usually needs a permit or approval.
We don’t quote an ordinance number or fee because we can’t verify the current one. Confirm with the City of San Marcos before placing a bin in the street. Start at sanmarcostx.gov.
Move-out season
San Marcos gets busy around the end of the spring semester and before the fall semester. If your job lines up with a move-out:
- book early; bins and delivery windows fill up
- confirm the pickup date, not just the drop-off
- ask what counts as a prohibited item; mattresses and appliances often cost extra or aren’t allowed
Renters and landlords
If you’re renting, get the owner’s OK in writing before you order. Property managers often have their own placement rules, and some would rather arrange the bin themselves.
Common questions
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster in my driveway in San Marcos?
Usually not, if the whole bin stays on private property. Confirm with the City of San Marcos if you're unsure.
Can I put a dumpster on the street near Texas State?
Street placement is in the public right-of-way and usually needs city approval. Streets near downtown and campus are narrow and busy, so check with the City of San Marcos before you schedule delivery.
I rent my house. Can I order a dumpster?
Get written permission from your landlord or property manager first. They may have rules about placement, and some will want to order it themselves.
Verify before you book. This is general information, not legal advice, and we don't rent dumpsters. City rules, HOA rules, and hauler policies change. Confirm with the city and the hauler.
